The Compulsory Future Of Work Is Changing Rapidly. Technological Advancements Are Automating Many Jobs And The Rise Of The Gig Economy Is Making It Easier For People To Work On Their Own Terms. As A Result Many People Are Wondering If Work Will Still Be Compulsory In The Future.

There Are A Number Of Factors That Suggest That Work May Become Compulsory In The Future.

1. Automation Is Only Going To Continue To Grow In The Years To Come.

This Means That More And More Jobs Will Be Lost To Machines. In Order To Maintain A Basic Standard Of Living People Will Need To Find New Ways To Make Money.

2. The Gig Economy Is Becoming Increasingly Popular.

This Means That People Are Increasingly Working On Their Own Terms Often Without Any Benefits Or Security. In Order To Make A Living In The Gig Economy People Will Need To Be Highly Skilled And Constantly Available To Work.

3. The Population Is Aging.

This Means That There Will Be Fewer People Of Working Age In The Future. In Order To Maintain Economic Growth There Will Need To Be More People Working.

There Are Also Factors That Suggest That Work May Not Be Compulsory In The Future. For Example  Some People Believe That Technology Will Eventually Become So Advanced That It Will Be Able To Meet All Of Our Needs Eliminating The Need For Work Altogether.

Additionally  Some People Believe That The Rise Of Artificial Intelligence Will Lead To A More Leisure Society Where People Will Have More Free Time To Pursue Their Interests.

Ultimately The Question Of Whether Or Not Work Will Be Compulsory In The Future Is A Complex One. There Are Many Factors That Will Influence The Answer And It Is Impossible To Say For Sure What The Future Holds.

However   It Is Clear That The Nature Of Work Is Changing And That People Will Need To Be Prepared For A Future Where Work May Not Be As Guaranteed As It Once Was.

The Future Of Work And How To Prepare

They Say That Times Of Adversity Bring People Together. While That Could Not Be Truer In The Face Of Covid-19 “Togetherness” Looks Different Than It Has Before And Will Continue To Evolve Long After The Virus Is Under Control. The Way We Individually Experience These Challenges May Differ But The Struggle Is Universally Shared.

I Am Especially Cognizant Of The Ways Togetherness Is Occurring In A Work Setting And How Our Current Reality Will Create Both Short Changes And Long Transformations In The Workplace.

1. Unprecedented Connectedness

While Working Remotely Many Employees Are Making A More Concerted Effort To Connect With Their Colleagues Than They Ever Did In The Office. From Virtual Lunches To Video Happy Hours People Are Taking The Initiative To Find New Ways To Connect With Each Other From Afar And Many Employees Who Normally Work Remotely Feel More Connected
They Are Not The Only Ones Working From Home Anymore Even In The Unlikely Case That We All Permanently Return To Physical Office Location The Importance Of Deepening Workplace Connections Will Remain  And HR Professionals Can Help By Creating Opportunities For This To Happen.

2. Lasting Flexibility

Employees Are Experiencing Unprecedented Levels Of Flexibility From Their Employers. This Is Currently Out Of Pure Necessity But Will Soon Become An Expectation Of Employees.
Whether Due To Productivity Fears Or Otherwise Companies That Have Been Hesitant To Broadly Introduce The Ability To Work Remotely May Need To Rethink Their Approach In Order To Attract And Retain Talent.
I Believe That By And Large Employees Have Proven They Are Adaptable To New Working Environments And Can Still Produce Results Sometimes More Efficiently Than In The Office.
